Los Angeles: Where are the Jobs?

Los Angeles: Where are the Jobs?

If you have ever walked around downtown L.A. and wondered "Where are the jobs?" - you are certainly not alone. With the unemployment rate hovering around 13% (November 2010, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics) things are not looking Hollywood worthy - at least not yet.

I don't want to generalize, but southern California typically has a pretty high unemployment rate to begin with. Everyday, thousands of people are moving to (and moving away from) our fair city. They are usually chasing the dream - fame, fortune, and celebrity and then give up and go back. This type of unemployment we are seeing is different though - it is our own citizens who are giving up and moving away due to lack of employment and opportunity.

What can we do? Are the unemployed helpless? Absolutely not. This is one of those tough times we just have to get through - and we will. While we wait for this to all blow over it is important to understand that we are not alone and while the problems with employment has effected us personally - it has effected many more people in a much worse way. If you are unemployed and looking for work - take some time and give back to the community - you might be surprised what volunteering could bring you.
